wish เป็นกริยา หมายถึง "ปรารถนาดี หรือต้องการ" มีวิธีใช้ดังนี้ 1. to wish (someone) to do something
wish + to + V1
เป็นความปรารถนาหรือต้องการ ทำสิ่งหนึ่งสิ่งใดที่เป็นไปได้
- We wish to book some seats for the concert.
- Do you wish to sit here , sir?
- She wishes to go to the party.
2. to wish someone something
wish + Noun + Noun
เป็นความปรารถนาให้ผู้อื่น ได้รับความสุขสำเร็จหรือสิ่งที่ดีงาม
- We wish him all the best.
- I wish you a Happy New Year.
- I wish you success and happiness.
- I wish you a Merry Christmas.
- I wish you the very best of luck.
3. to wish (that) + noun clause
ประโยคที่ใช้ตามหลัง wish นั้นเป็นประโยคแสดงสิ่งที่ปรารถนาซึ่งตรงข้ามกับความเป็นจริง
หรือปรารถนาในสิ่งที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ ซึ่งมีวิธีใช้ ดังนี้
3.1 ความปรารถนาในปัจจุบัน
wish + Past Simple (wish = If only ซึ่งใช้แทนกันได้)
If only
- Do you wish you lived in America now?
- I wish I could speak German.
- We wish we weren't so tired.
ประโยคทั้ง 3 ข้างต้นนี้ ความเป็นจริงมิได้เป็นอย่างที่ปรารถนา เมื่อเรานึกถึงความเป็นจริงที่เกิดขึ้น
เราใช้ "I'm sorry" หรือ "It's a pity" แสดงความจริงที่เกิดขึ้นในปัจจุบัน
เราใช้ I'm sorry หรือ It's a pity + Present Simple
- Do you wish you lived in America now? (ความปรารถนาในปัจจุบัน)
(=Are you sorry / Is it a pity you don't live in America now? - ความจริงในปัจจุบัน)
- I wish I could speak German. (ความปรารถนาในปัจจุบัน)
(= I'm sorry/It's a pity I can't speak German. -- ความจริงในปัจจุบัน)
- We wish we weren't so tired. (ความปรารถนาในปัจจุบัน)
(= I'm sorry / It's a pity we are so tired. --- ความจริงในปัจจุบัน)
ดังนั้นการใช้ wish ต้องดูว่าเป็นความปรารถนาในปัจจุบัน อดีต หรืออนาคต
3.2 ความปรารถนาในอนาคต
wish + S + would + V1
(If only)
- I wish I could go with you next Sunday. (ถ้าประธานเป็นคนเดียวกัน ใช้ could)
(If only I could go with you next Sunday.)
- I wish Jack would come to my birthday party tomorrow evening.
(= It's a pity Jack won't come.)
- He wishes he could swim.
(=It's a pity he can't swim.)
- She wishes I would go with her.
(=I'm sorry I won't go with her.)
3.3 ความปรารถนาในอดีต
wish + Past Perfect
If only
เป็นการแสดงความปรารถนาสิ่งที่ไม่อาจเป็นจริงขึ้นมาได้ และตรงข้ามกับความเป็นจริงในอดีต
- I wish you had been here yesterday. ฉันปรารถนาว่าคุณอยู่ที่นี่เมื่อวานนี้
(= It's a pity you weren't here yesterday.) ความเป็นจริงคือเมื่อวานคุณไม่ได้อยู่ที่นี่
- I wish it hadn't rained heavily yesterday. ความปรารถนาเหตุการณ์ในอดีต
(=It's a pity it rained heavily yesterday. ความจริงในอดีต)
- I wish I had worked harder last semester. ความปรารถนาเหตุการณ์ในอดีต
(= It's a pity I didn't work harder last semester. ความเป็นจริงในอดีต)
- If only the weather had been better yesterday. ความปรารถนาในอดีต
